Abstract
Written by a biologist and manager of the Amandaris Permaculture Project in Santa Elena, this article presents the concepts of permaculture, ecovillages, and bioregionalism as design strategies for sustainable human settlements. The author describes the Global Ecovillage Network and its presence in Colombia, and presents permaculture, developed by Bill Mollison in Australia in the 1970s, as a design toolkit based on three ethical principles and ten design principles. The text documents the first Colombian Gathering of Ecovillages and Alternative Communities held in December 2006, and recounts the author's experience building Aldea Feliz and its sister project in Santa Elena, Medellín.
