Eight Bird Species Threatened with Extinction by Hunting and Habitat Deterioration in Antioquia

Abstract

This article characterizes the conservation status of eight native Antioquian bird species that are threatened or endangered, belonging to the families Tinamidae, Cracidae, Phasianidae, and Psittacidae, including the blue-billed curassow (Crax alberti), an endemic species classified as critically endangered. The authors document that these species are threatened by the combination of subsistence hunting practiced by communities living in poverty and the accelerated transformation of their forest habitats for cattle ranching, agriculture, and illicit crops. For each species, its IUCN threat category, geographic distribution, habitat, and reproductive ecology are detailed, highlighting records in Antioquian municipalities such as Anorí, Nechí, and Remedios.
