Abstract

Written by an agricultural economist, this article reflects on the global food crisis from a perspective combining anthropology, economics, and social analysis, arguing that food insecurity is fundamentally a matter of social policy rather than natural scarcity. The author presents data on the imbalance in global resource consumption and examines strategies for addressing food insecurity among vulnerable populations, including urban poor access to farmable land. The text proposes urban agriculture as a central strategy for cities, presenting international examples and outlining its pilot viability for the comunas of the Aburrá Valley in Medellín, linked to community-based waste-recycling management models.
