Abstract

Written by two professionals from the French NGO Envol Vert, this article presents the methodology and results of calculating Colombia's Forest Footprint, a tool for measuring the impact of mass-consumption products on deforestation. The authors document that the average net Forest Footprint of a Colombian is 1,278 m² of deforested land, and that 75-80% of this footprint is due to the consumption of beef and dairy, far above the impact attributed to coca (2.4%), despite its political stigmatization. The text describes the calculation methodology applied to twelve priority raw materials and presents agroforestry as a sustainable alternative, concluding with recommendations for consumers, government, and businesses.
