Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the sedimentable particulate matter (SPM) retention capacity of two species: Mangifera indica and Psidium guajava. Sampling was conducted at eight sites within the campus of the Universidad de Antioquia, divided into two rings located in outer and inner perimeters, each ring subdivided into four sectors (zones). Non-parametric statistical tests (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis) were used to compare differences between species, positions, and zones regarding captured SPM. The effects of Species (p=0.962) and Position (p=0.887) were not significant, while those of Zone were (p=0.001). The results indicate that SPM retention is mainly governed by the location of the sampled individuals within the sectors, since wind and turbulence caused by building roughness, along with the proximity of these individuals to a point emission source, increase SPM retention.
