Eastern Antioquia: Territorial Actions for the Sustainability of Rural Community Development

Abstract

Written by the Executive Director of CEAM, this article presents eastern Antioquia as a region supplying food, water, energy, and minerals to the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area, whose ecological footprint disrupts peasant communities. The author documents data on extreme rural poverty and the humanitarian crisis stemming from the armed conflict, and presents the region's wealth of environmental goods and services. The text denounces conflicts arising from the metropolitan development model and presents an extensive list of proposals from eastern Antioquia's social organizations, including the recognition and payment of environmental services.
