Abstract
This article presents the fundamental elements of the environmental management of Carbones del Cerrejón Limited, which operates the world's largest open-pit export coal mine in La Guajira. The text describes the environmental programs certified under ISO 14001 since 2003, including air and water quality control, and the land rehabilitation program, which has restored nearly 2,600 hectares through the planting of 1.2 million trees. It documents the wildlife protection program, including a Rehabilitation Center that has rescued 12,683 individuals from 85 species.
