Solid Waste Management at Ciudad Universitaria, Universidad de Antioquia

Abstract

Written by the environmental manager of the Universidad de Antioquia, this article describes the growing problem of solid-waste generation at Ciudad Universitaria, which rose from 1,800 kg/day of common waste in 2003 to 2,400 kg/day in 2004. The authors describe the current waste-management system, structured in four subsystems: source separation, transport to ten collection points, collection three times a day, and differentiated final disposal, and present the ongoing construction of an organic-fertilizer processing plant with a capacity of 2 tons daily, currently in a favorable pilot-testing phase.
