Abstract

This article presents a microbiological study of household solid organic waste in the San Antonio de Prado corregimiento (Medellín), conducted under the 2005 Integrated Solid Waste Management project. The authors biochemically characterize bacterial species present in samples collected from four sectors of the corregimiento, identifying pathogenic species such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Clostridium botulinum, associated with diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid fever, and botulism. The text correlates these findings with consultation data from the local hospital unit during 2004, and documents the presence of local vector fauna with zoonotic transmission potential, concluding with recommendations on closing collection points, increasing collection frequency, and using clean techniques such as composting and vermiculture.
