Abstract

This article describes the implementation of the Integrated Solid Waste Management program in four of Medellín's five corregimientos, under the 2004-2007 Municipal Development Plan. The author presents rural waste-characterization data showing that the organic fraction represents 53.21% of total waste generated by weight, and the recyclable fraction 35.20%. The text documents in detail the pioneering experience of the San Sebastián de Palmitas corregimiento, where source separation, over six months of operation, diverted approximately six tons of organic fraction and 2.5 tons of recyclable fraction, with 95% citizen participation, describing the operation of the central composting plant and the recyclables collection center.
