Abstract
This article characterizes the origin and typology of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), understood as part of the urban metabolism, and presents figures from a sampling conducted at a municipal waste dump in Medellín in May 2004, which recorded 4,837.5 tons of CDW daily, composed mainly of soil and dredged material. The author, director of the Technical Studies and Research Division (DETIN), proposes a CDW treatment hierarchy based on prevention, valorization (reuse and recycling), and controlled final disposal, and documents a real experience of building prefabricated housing with recycled construction-waste aggregates, compliant with Colombia's earthquake-resistant building code (NSR-98) at a cost similar to conventional construction. The text concludes by noting the technical, economic, and environmental viability of CDW Management Plans, contingent on political will, support from the construction industry, and continued research.
