Abstract

This article characterizes New World vultures, reviewing their symbolic significance in pre-Columbian cultures and their role as an Andean national symbol. The authors describe the species present in Colombia and their ecological function as carrion consumers, arguing for a reassessment of their sanitary role in the face of historical persecution.
