Abstract

This article presents a general characterization of bryophytes (liverworts, hornworts, and mosses), non-vascular plants with approximately 20,000 species worldwide. It describes their ecological importance as moisture regulators and bioindicators of environmental quality. The author reports a preliminary inventory in the El Romeral Reserve, identifying around 40 moss species and 15 liverwort species, several of them potentially threatened, and concludes with recommendations for further study.
