Resumen

importante conocer la magnitud global y local de la deforestación tropical, la cual constituye la segunda fuente neta de emisiones de carbono a la atmósfera. Información de coberturas terrestres de los años 1980 y 2000 en Antioquia se empleó en el cálculo tanto del área deforestada como en las tasas bruta y neta anuales de deforestación, expresadas en porcentaje. Los resultados indican que en veinte años, se deforestaron - 380.000 ha, lo que equivale a un promedio anual bruto y neto de 19.000 ha y 14.060 ha, y a tasas anuales bruta y neta de deforestación de 0,93% y 0,69%, respectivamente; éstas corresponden por lo menos al doble de las tasas promedias reportadas para Latinoamérica en el período 1990-1997. La continua conversión de bosques en Antioquia podría conducir a consecuencias insospechadas en la pérdida de biodiversidad y la provisión de servicios ecosistémicos indispensables para garantizar el bienestar humano.
