Forests in San Luis, a Natural Richness Under Threat

Abstract

The municipality of San Luis, in eastern Antioquia, still has forests with high species diversity in fauna and flora, some of them endemic. Associated with the lushness of the forests is a wealth of water resources that supplies the entire region. But these exceptional landscapes and the life they contain are threatened by various activities that prioritize monetary gain over ecosystem conservation and community well-being. Mining, hydroelectric projects, cattle ranching, and logging are activities that are putting the survival of these forests at risk. In response, a call is made to join forces, starting with the community and the environmental authority, to build alternatives that, in addition to providing decent income for the population, allow the region's forests to be conserved.
