Abstract
Recent evidence shows that Antioquia should be considered a megadiverse region. However, both historical deforestation (70% of the department's area) and current deforestation (25,000 ha of forest cleared per year) place Antioquia first on the list of departments with the highest number of threatened species in Colombia. Additionally, the current protected areas system (SIDAP) can be considered relatively inefficient; SIDAP, under strict conservation status, covers barely 5% of the department, and much of it is located in areas of medium biodiversity relevance. In this regard, it is a high priority to begin a process to consolidate the current SIDAP and identify new areas that should be legally declared for protection.
