Abstract

Written by the Director of the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area, this article presents institutional biodiversity conservation actions in the metropolitan region, home to nearly 3.3 million people, most of whom depend on external resources. The author describes the establishment of the Metropolitan Protected Areas System, which identified 97 priority focal species, and presents bird-research findings, documenting the local extinction of 77 of 316 historically recorded species. The text also describes the urban environmental authority's role in controlling illegal wildlife trafficking, improving ecological networks, and the Metropolitan Reforestation Plan.
