Abstract
Drawing on his own experience with wildlife — whose destruction he witnessed and took part in as a child — the author proposes holding alternative nature-based events alongside conventional cultural events. This allows people to reconnect with the city's trees, revitalize their sense of identity with their communities and neighborhoods, and promote the values needed to live out a culture of peace and solidarity. It is a reaffirmation of our bond with nature, symbolized in the trees that residents themselves have planted to commemorate special events — such as a birth or death, an anniversary, or a commitment to life.
