Abstract
Written by an environmental engineer, Manager of Health, Safety, Environment, and Community Relations at Rio Tinto Exploration, this article reflects on the importance of environmental and social dimensions in mining exploration. The author develops a methodological approach based on observation and active listening, contrasting a unilateral model with a participatory one based on community environmental monitoring groups. The text illustrates this approach with cases of community water monitoring and waste management in remote areas, concluding that trust in mining exploration depends more on sensitivity than on economic resources.
