Biofuel, Mining, and the Environment

Abstract

Written by a civil and process engineer, this article presents a favorable outlook on biofuels as an energy alternative to the oil crisis and urban pollution, focusing on biodiesel for Colombia. The author documents benefits attributed to biodiesel and presents technological development of biofuels from organic waste and used cooking oils, contrasting this with palm-oil-based production linked to deforestation. The text proposes rehabilitating soils degraded by illegal mining in Antioquia's gold-mining areas through jatropha crops interplanted with reforestation.
