Abstract

Written by an environmental engineer and partner at Fungicol Ltda., this article presents the use of beneficial microorganisms as an alternative to synthetic agrochemicals for biofertilization, biological pest control, and improved plant health. The author presents results from four field experiments conducted on rice crops in the Colombian Eastern Plains during 2007, comparing plots treated with biofertilizing microorganisms against plots under conventional management. The text documents production increases of between 4.8 and 11.2 sacks of rice per hectare, translating into additional net economic benefits, concluding that biological products are compatible with conventional chemical inputs.
