Abstract

Written by the Director of the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Medellín, this article critiques the intensive industrial poultry system, describing the confinement conditions of battery-cage laying hens and broiler chickens, as well as associated practices such as the culling of male chicks and beak trimming. The author traces the historical origins of this system to the 1930s and describes the final fate of the birds after their productive cycle. In its second half, the text develops an argument in favor of vegetarianism, including anatomical comparisons and linking meat consumption to cardiovascular disease, closing with a quote from Albert Einstein.
