Sustainable Biofuels for Colombia: A Social and Environmental Reflection

Abstract

Written by a civil engineer with a master's degree in Urban and Environmental Systems, this article presents a critical analysis of the social and environmental sustainability of biofuels as a response to global climate change. The author documents the two main types of biofuels and examines the criticisms associated with their production, including competition with food crops and the questionable net energy balance of some crops. The text proposes six fundamental criteria for sustainable biofuel production: not undermining food security, exploring polyculture systems, rehabilitating land degraded by mining, protecting wild areas, ensuring social equity, and leveraging technological opportunities through the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism, proposing an increase in the proportion of biodiesel used in Colombia.
