Management of Green Public Space and Urban Flora in the Municipality of Medellín, 2004-2007

Abstract

Written by the Secretary of the Environment of Medellín and her technical team, this article presents municipal management of green public space during 2004-2007, based on a diagnosis that identified a deficit of green space per capita and low floristic diversity, with 70% of species of introduced origin. The authors document the publication of Decree 1803 of 2006, which adopted the Urban Forestry Manual, and present five policy lines for managing green public space. The text details results from the four-year period: 84,418 new trees planted, a 23.17% increase in total urban tree cover, and the implementation of five Ecological Networks in the city's western zone.
