Abstract
Written by two chemical engineers from the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area, this article presents the institutional management carried out between 2004 and 2007 to prevent and control air pollution in the region. The authors describe the operation of a monitoring network with 16 permanent stations, the development of air-quality forecasting models in partnership with regional universities, and present data from the industrial-emissions inventory identifying Medellín, Itagüí, La Estrella, and Sabaneta as responsible for 80% of emissions. The text documents the signing of the Air Quality Pact and details control actions on fixed and mobile sources, including the characterization of fuels distributed in the region.
