Abstract
Written by an environmental engineer from Universidad de La Salle, this article analyzes air pollution from diesel fuel use in the Aburrá Valley, explaining the three key factors determining vehicle emissions: technology, fuel quality, and usage conditions. The author describes how diesel engines work technically and compares emissions across different fuels, noting that diesel engines emit up to 100 times more soot particles than gasoline engines. The text denounces that diesel distributed by Ecopetrol in the Aburrá Valley contains 4,500 parts per million of sulfur, far above the international standard of 50 ppm, concluding with recommendations for renewing the vehicle fleet.
