Abstract
Written by a biologist from the Interdisciplinary Group for Molecular Studies at the Universidad de Antioquia, this article analyzes the technical foundations of producing organic fertilizers from solid waste. The author describes the biochemical processes of organic-matter stabilization and the quality parameters set by Colombian Technical Standard NTC-5167, presenting comparative results between organic materials with and without source separation that confirm substantial differences in nutritional quality and heavy-metal contamination. The text documents genotoxicity test results using sister chromatid exchange, and presents a comparative analysis of two commercial organic fertilizer products against current regulations.
