Regional Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (PGIRS) of the Aburrá Valley

Abstract

Written by the Environmental Deputy Director of the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area (AMVA), this article presents the process of formulating the Regional Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (PGIRS) for the nine municipalities that make up the AMVA, under its functions as urban environmental authority established by Law 99 of 1993. The author describes the region's critical waste-management situation, worsened by a lack of infrastructure, and explains the regulatory framework enabling the formulation of a consensus-based regional PGIRS, developed in partnership with the Environmental Engineering and Management Group of the Universidad de Antioquia and AINSA-ACODAL. The text details the objectives and components of the Regional PGIRS, which covers all stages of waste management, and presents priority actions identified for its implementation.
