Abstract
This article presents a technical history of polymer development, from ancient natural fibers to the synthesis of the first synthetic plastic in 1909. The author explains the chemical foundations of macromolecules and describes the boom in petroleum-derived plastic production, as well as the impact of the 1970s oil crisis in driving recycling forward.
