Abstract
Phenology and dendrochronology, as fields of science, share common and complementary points; both emerged in the late 19th century and gained momentum in the mid-20th century. Phenology studies events such as flowering, fruiting, leafing, and leaf fall in plants. Dendrochronology focuses on growth rings. Both scientific disciplines are useful for validating indicators of ecosystem health, among other applications. The conceptual and methodological integration of dendrochronology and phenology makes it possible to generate a symbiotic discipline that could be called dendrophenology, applied to studying growth rings through a phenological event; however, this cognitive avenue has so far been little developed. Globally, its potential has already begun to be demonstrated, although few studies of this type have been published, and even fewer in the tropics.
