Abstract

Dendrochronology is a science dedicated to determining the age of trees based on their growth rings, on the assumption that various biological, physical, or anthropic processes have shaped their growth rates and structure. This field of biology has a wide range of applications, from the climatic and environmental reconstruction of the Earth to dating the moment when a root grew through a body's clothing or skeleton, and the time at which it was buried. Since applications of dendrochronology in forensic science have proven to be a successful tool in solving criminal cases and cases related to various illicit activities, this article presents some relevant examples of this science being used for such purposes.
